R.K. Mission Blind Boys' Academy, Narendrapur

Light Engineering Training

Ramakrishna Mission Blind Boys’ Academy has been imparting vocational training to the adult blinds for long years with a view to resettling them in the mainstream of society. Light Engineering training is one of the major residential training of the vocational part. It was started in the year 1964. Duration of the training course is 18 months divided in 3 phases 6 months each. Pre-Vocation, Vocational and Advance Course. The trainees come from different parts of Bengal and sometimes from outside Bengal also. The session starts in January and July every year. We broadcast the information’s about the training from all India Radio, Kolkata atleast 2 months back from the commencement of the training and the candidates may download the Admission Form from our website.

The trainees are taught how to operate Power-driven machines like Drill, Power Press, Centre Lathe, Capstan Lathe, Hackshaw, Fly Press/Ball Press etc. in addition to that they also learn Braille, mobility training, Basic Computer, Envelop making, Carpentry work, Electric wiremanship, preparing candles, soaps and plates with Shal leaves. Through these types of jobs they could develop their Motor Skill and confidence to do any respective job in future. After the completion of the training we provide financial support to the trainees for their self-employment. Our Placement Cell also makes a special drive to procure for them that type of employment through which they can run their own life and family as a responsible member of the society.
This is very comprehensive and intensive training for the blind adults which develops their self-confidence.

Demonstration Van
Blind Boys’ Academy imparts Light Engineering Training in our own campus. It is not expected that all the people will come to our training centre to see the activities of our blind trainees. But we feel that the common people should be aware about the capability of our blind trainees. With this view in end the Academy introduced a “Demonstration Van” equipped with Power-driven Mini Lathe, Grinding & Drill Machines, Chow Making Machine, Press Machine, and Paper cutting machine etc. in the year 1976. The students of our Industrial Training Section worked on these machines to develop their confidence and skill no less than that of a sighted person. We send it to different fairs and gatherings in and around Kolkata to make the general people most aware about the potentialities of the blind persons and also to impress upon the public in general about the opportunities available for the blind at Narendrapur.
