Annual Celebration :
The 54th Annual Celebrations and Exhibition were inaugurated by Swami Sarvabhutanandaji Maharaj, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Gol Park, Kolkata, by lighting a lamp at 1.00 p.m. on January 21, 2011. On January 22, the Prize-giving Ceremony was held at 2.00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall of Academy. Shri Bikram Sen, I.A.S. , Secretary to the Government of West Bengal, Department of School Education, Presided over the programme . Mr. R. Rajagopal, Chairman, Railway Recruitment Board, Minister of Railways, Government of India was present as Guest-in-Chief. Shri Bikram Sen and Mr. R. Rajagopal gave away the prizes, certificates and scholarships to the successful students and trainees.

On 21st January, Shir Rahul Mitra, An Eminent singer presented Rabindra Sangeet in the Vivekananda Centenary Hall. On 22nd, the students of the Academy put up a Rabindra Drama “PHALGUNI” which was acclaimed by the spectators.

New Session :

New Session of the Blind Boys’ Academy started on January 4, 2011.

Louis Braille Memorial Dey:

The Samskriti Parishad of the Academy Observed the Louis Braille Memorial Day on 4th January, 2011 in collaboration with Amway Opportunity Foundation (A.O.F.). On that day, the A.O.F. organized a Braille Reading and Writing Competition among the students of the Academy. Mr.G.S. Chima, Area Manager (West Bengal, Sikkim, Andaman) of A.O.F. gave away the prizes to the winners of the competition.

Madhyamik Pariksha:
The Madhayamik Pariksha 2011 started on 23rd February, 2011. This year 12 students of the Academy appeared in the examination.

A) The birthday tithi of Swamiji was observed on January 12, 2011 in the Vivekananda Centenary Hall. Our boys presented devotional song.

B) The birthday of Netaji was celebrated on January 23.

C) Republic Day was observed through Flag Hoisting, march Past, National Anthem etc. on January 26 in the Ashrama. Our students led the National Anthem in the programme.

D) Public Celebration in Connection with the Birth Anniversaries of Sri Sri Thakur, Ma and Swamiji was observed on February 6, 2011. The students of the Academy participated in live broadcasting and presented devotional songs before the public meeting in the Amra Kunja in front of the Vidyalaya.

E) Sir sri Saraswati Puja was performed in the Vidyalaya Assembly Hall with Devotion on February 8. Our students presented songs and offered pushpanjali along with the students of other units of the Ashrama.

National Youth Day:
National Youth Day was observed on 12th January, 2011 in the Vivekanda Centenary Hall of the Ashram. Our Students, trainees and member of the staff participated in the programme .
Three students participated in All Bengal sports meet for the sightless on 28.1.2011 organized by the Calcutta Blind School, Behala, Kolkata-34. They own the following prizes:

Eight students participated in the Braille Reading and Writing Competition on 2nd February, 2011 organized by the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, regional Chapter, Kolkata. Our students won the following prizes:

Four Students participated in West Bengal State Games (Swimming) 2010-2011 on 21.02.2011 at Subhas Sarovar Swimming Pool. They won the following prizes:

Awareness Campaign:
The Demonstration Van which is equipped with power-driven Mini Lathe, Grinding and Drill Machine and other which the blind people can operate was taken to Sarkar Bagan Friend’s Circle, 19/4b, Nilmoni Mitra Road, Kolkata from 11.1.11 to 14.1.11 on the occasion of Science Fair & Flower Exhibition.

Kids’ Guernica :
25 students of our Academy participated in an Art Workshop where they folded papers into different shapes (Flower, Birds, Fish, Animals etc.) and pasted the origami on a large canvas. The boys were guided by Shri Asit Podder, Photography Artist and Member, Kids’ Guernica International Committee, Shri Netal Das, Craft Instructor and Debasis Bera, Art Teacher of the Blind Boys ‘ Academy, on 3rd ,4th and 5th January, 2011.

Cultural Program :
The students of the Academy presented songs on 30.1.2011 in the Vivekananda Centenary Hall of the Ashrama on the occasion of the Annual Cultural Function organised by Narendra Jyoti (A Welfare Society ),3/51, Viveknagar, P.O. Santoshpur , Kolkata – 75.
Shrimat Swami Prabhanandaji Maharaj, General Secretary, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission , Belur Math , Howrah released C.D . Containing devotional songs participated by three students and music teachers of the Academy.

Cultural Program :
The students of Academy also presented devotional songs and orchestra on 20th February, 2011 at Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Berhampur, Murshidabad on the occasion of their Annual Celebration.

Visit :
Among the various personalities and teams who visited the Academy during the report period, the following may be mentioned:
(a) On 4.1.11 , 27 Second year GNM students of school of Nursing, Asia Heart Foundation, Kolkata.
(b) On 7.1.11, 3000 students accompanied by 10 teachers from Salt Lake school, Kolkata .
(c) On 14.2.11, a batch of 3rd year GNM Nursing students from Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan, Kolkata.
(d) On 18.2.11, a group of youths from the Youth Commission as a part of Nationwide Program K2K-Kashmir to Kannakumari.
(e) On 23.2.11, a group of 26 trainees of B.Ed. special Education (VI) and one teacher from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata -50.

Madhyamik Pariksha :
The Work Education and Physical Education Examination of our Madhyamik Candidates 2011 were held on 14th March, 2011 and 25th March, 2011 respectively.

R.C.I.-CRE Programme :
The Academy conducted a five-day Continuing Rehabilitation Education Programme on “Method of Teaching” sponsored by the Rehabilitation council on India, new Delhi from 08.03.2011 to 12.03.2011 for the professionals registered with R.C.I. Altogether 22 professionals working in different Institutions participated.

Cultural Programme:
The students of the Academy presented devotional song & orchestra on 06.03.2011 at Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ Home Rahara and Ramakrashna Math (Yogodyan), Kankurgachhi, Kolkata on the occasion of 176th Tithipuja day of Sri Ramakrishna. On 12.03.2011 the students also presented devotional songs at Ramakrishna Math, Baghbazar, Kolkata on the said occasion and on 13.03.2011, they presented devotional songs & orchestra at Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, Howrah on the occasion of Public Celebrations in Connection with Sri Sri Thakur’s Birth Anniversary.

External Competition:
The Academy team consisting of 6 students participated in the Kajal Nag Memorial Talent contest on 28th February, 2011 organized by Inner Wheel Club of south Calcutta at Nehru Children’s Museum, Kolkata. Our Institution emerged Group Champion.

Child Radio Reporter Project :
On 12th March, 2011, 2 (two) students participating in the child Radio Reporter Project of Community Radio JU 90.8 MHz, organised by school of Media Communication and Culture , Jadavpur University , Kolkata.

(1) Shivaratri on 02.03.2011
(2) The 176th Birth Tithi Sri Sri Ramakrishna was celebrated on March 6, 2011. In the morning a colorful procession was taken out and it passed through different streets of the Ashram and it outskirts. A meeting was arranged in the Vivekananda Centenary Hall after the procession was over. The programme included songs, readings, speeches atc. Our students put up devotional songs.
(3) Dolyatra was celebrated on 19th March, 2011.

Educational Tour:
20 trainees of B.Ed. (Special Education) 2010-2011 and one lecturer of T.I.T.V.H. went to Vishakhapattanam and Secunderabad to visit Institutions for the Persons with Disabilities, on 20.03.2011. They returned safely on 27.03.2011.

Teaching Martial Arts & Adventure Sports to the Blind:
The National Institute for the Visually Impaired, Regional Chapter, Kolkata, in collaboration with the Blind Boys’ Academy organizes a five-day programme on “Teaching Martial Arts & Adventure sports to the blind” from 28.03.2011 at the Academy. The inaugural meeting was held on 28.03.2011. Swami Yugeswaranandaji Maharaj, Treasurer of the Ashram, Smt. B.D. Chowdhury of NIVH, regional Chapter, Kolkata and experts from Institute of Climbers & Nature Lovers, Kolkata were present.

Among the various personalities and team who visited and Academy are mentioned below:
(1) From 9-11 March, 2011, 25 disable students including 5 faculty member from Jagatguru Ramanucharya University for the Handicapped, Chitrakoot.
(2) On 14.03.2011, a group of 41 (forty-one) 3rd year G.N.M. nursing students of school of nursing, Ramakrishna Mission seva Pratisthan, Kolkata.
(3) On 18.03.2011, 7 students of final year Human Development Course from J.D. Birla Institute, Kolkata and a group of B.Ed. students of Uluberia College.

The 65th Independence Day was observed on 15th August, 2011 in the Vivekananda Centenary Hall. Justice Chittatosh Mukherjee, presided over the function. The students of the Academy presented orchestra in the function.

Internal Competition:
(a) The Intra-Academy Annual Debate Competition was held on 16th July, 2011.
(b) Intra-Academy Clay Modeling Competition was held on 6th August, 2011.
(c) Intra-Academy Music Competition was held on 3rd September, 2011.

Inter-School debate Competition :
The 40th Inter-school Debate Competition was organised on 12th August,2011 The motion being, in the option of the house, “the irresistable attraction of the advertisement for consumable goods is diviating youth from decency of Values”. Besides the Academy , 14 (fourteen) other school viz, Bidya Bharati Girls’ high School, Gokkhale Memorial Girls’ School, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur, Lions Calcutta greater Vidyamandair, Sarada Vidyapith, Niva Ananda Vidyalaya, B.D.Memorial International, future Campus School, St.Xaviers’ collegiate school, Ramakrishna Sarada Mission sister Nivedita Girls’ school, Holy cross School ,Scottish Church Collegiate school, Subhasini Balika sikshalaya and Nava Nalanda High School (H.S.) participated in the Debate. Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Sister Nivedita Girls' School emerged Champion and Sarada Vidhyapith, Sonarpur, won Runners-Up Cup. Shri Arka Chatterjee of Sarada Vidhyapith stood first; Km. Ahana Mukherjee of Gokhale Memorial Girls' School and Km. Taniya Sarkar of Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Sister Nivedita Girls' School stood 2nd and 3rd respectively. Shri Tarun Chakraborty, Audio Artist acted as Chairman. Shrimat Swami Satyatmanandaji Maharaj, Assistant Secretary of the Ashrama gave away the prizes and certifications. The Board of Judges of the competition comprised (1) Smt. Krishna Basu, Eminent Poet (2) Shir Pathik Guha, Senier Journalist, Ananda Bazar Patrika and (3) Dr. Kallol Ghosh, Social Activist.

Teachers’ day :
On the occasion of the “Teachers’ day “, which is the birthday of Dr.S.Radhakrishnan, the Sanskriti Parishad of the Academy organised a programme which include songs, speeches, recitation etc in the Academy Assembly Hall, on the 5th September, 2011.
In collaboration with the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, Dehradun, a short-term training programme on “Right to Education” was also organized that day. Mrs. Chaitali Dutta, president, west Bengal board of secondary Education delivered Key-note Address. Shrimat Swami Suparnanandaji Maharaj, Secretary of the Ashram delivered Works of Blessings. Shri Achintam Chatterjee, Associate Professor, Ramakrishna Mission Residential college, Narendrapur, Mrs. Malina Dey, District Mass Education Extension  officer, south 24- Parganas, government of west Bengal and Miss Mousree Basistha, Assistant Professor, Kingston Law College, Barasat spoke on the topic. Principals/Headmasters/Assistant teachers of schools for the Blind and Schools for the sighted students participated.

Janmastami :
The students of the Academy observed Janmastami on August 22, 2011 in the Academy Assembly Hall through Chanting, Bhajana, speeches, Geetialekhya, a reading from ‘Gita’, Drama etc. Swami Ishtavratanandaji Maharaj of our Ashrama presided over the programme and enlightened the audience about the life and teachings of Lord Shri Krishna .

Musical Programme :
On 29th July, 2011, a group of our students along with some members of the staff preformed musical programme on the occasion of coming 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda oganised by Arise and Awake, 155/2, Swin Hee Lane, Kolkata, at the Triguna Sen Auditorium of Jadavpur University.

Swimming Competition:
(A) 13(thirteen) students of our Academy participated in the swimming Competition for the Sightless at Rabindra Sarabar, organized by Indian Life Savings Society, Kolkata on 13.08.2011. they own several prizes as detailed below :

International Literacy Day 2011
A group of our students (15 ) performed Inaugural Song “Subha Karupathe Dharo Nirvay Gaan” on 8th September, 2011 in the programme of International Literary Day 2011 at Rabindra Sadan, organized by the Directorate of Mass Education Extension, Government of West Bengal .

12 (Twelve) students of the Academy appeared at the Madhyamik Pariksha 2011 conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education this year. All have passed securing 75% marks. The results are given below:

Summer Vacation:
The Academy remains closed for Vacation from 23.05.11 to 11.06.11.

Ashrama Foundation Day :
The 69th Foundation day of the Ashrama was observed on 6th May, 2011 on the auspicious Akshay Tritiya day in the Vivekanda Centenary hall. Shrimat Swami Suhitanandaji Maharaj, Assistant Secretary of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, in Belur Math, presided over the meeting and delivered Swami Lokeswarananda Memorial Lecture on “How Best We can celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda in the coming years”. Shrimat Swami Suparananandaji Maharaj welcome the guest and others present in the Hall. Our students presented opening Ashrama Sangeet. Shri Anindya Banerjee, teacher (Vocal) of the Academy also sang a Rabindra Sangeet.

Rabindra Jayanti :
150th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated on 9th May, 2011 at the Vivekananda Centenary Hall. Our boys presented song and recitation both solo and chorus culture on the occasion. Shri Dilip Bhattacharya, teacher (vocal) also participated in a duet song with revered Secretary by Maharaj.

Culture Programme :
The students of the Academy presented Orchestra on 10th April. 2011 at Andul Ananda Math, Howrah, on the occasion of 167th birthday of Sri Sri Premik Maharaj.

Sri Ram Navami and Vidyarthi Vrata :
The Vidyarthi Vrata, the vow taking ceremony of the newly admitted boys, was held on auspicious Ram Navami Tithi on 12th April, 2011 in Sri Ram Bhavana. Special Puja, Homa etc. were performed on the occasion. Shrimat Swami Suprarnanandaji Maharaj, Secretary of the Ashrama and Swami Istavratanandaji, Acharya of Vidyarthi Vrata Ceremony distributed the mementos to the students and trainees. Guardians, teachers and the members of the staff (non-teaching) were present on the occasion and received ‘Prasad’ at noon.

(a)On 13.4.11 39 students of FCED 1st batch of 2011 of IGNOU and Manovikas Kendra, Kolkata.
(b)On 28.5.11, 3 Ph. D. candidates, 5 Ph.D. students and 6 Masters students led by Mr. Madan Mohan Kundu, Professor and Chair, Deptt. Of Rehabilitation and Disability Studies at Southern University and Dr. Chrisann Schiro-Geist, Professor, Counselling, Educational Psychology and Research and Director, University of Memphis Institute on Disability.

Helen Keller Day :
The Academy in collaboration with the Amway opportunity Foundation observed Dr. Helen Keller’s Birth Anniversary on 25th June, 2011 in the Assembly Hall of the Academy. In this connection a non-competitive Quiz Competition among the sighted students and visually challenged students was organized. The Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya (English Medium & Bengali Medium) Narendrapur and Blind Boys’ Academy Participated. Some officials from Amway Opportunity Foundation who were present on the date gave away the certificates to the participants of the competition. Miss Anubrata Basu, Bio-technologist, acted as Quiz Conductor,. Shri Sujay Chandra Ganai, Teacer of the Academy spoke on the life of Dr. Helen Keller .

B.Ed. Special Education (V.I.) Examination :
The Final Examinations (Theoretical) of B.Ed. special Education of the TITVH of the Academy affiliated to University of Calcutta was held on 4.7.11 to 22.7.11 at the Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur and the Practical Examination held on 257h to 30th July, 2011 at the Blind Boys’ Academy.

Condolence :
Shri Krishana Kanta Raha, retired Lecturer-cum-Demonstrator of the Light Engineering Section of the Academy passed away on 6.6.2011. The students, trainees, teachers and non-teaching members of the staff of the Academy observed two minutes’ silence by standing up, on 14.6.11 as a mark of respect and to pay homage to him.

Vishwakarma Puja :
6 (six) students of the Academy put up devotional songs at the Industrial Training Centre of the Ashrama on 17.9.2011 on the occasion of Sri Sri Viswakarma Puja.

External Competition :
4 (four) students of the Academy participated in the Swami Vivekananda Centenary Endowment All-India Elocution Competition on Swami Vivekananda on the 12th September, 2011 organized by Ramakrishna Mission of Institute of Culture, Gol Park, Kolkata.

Staff Cultural Program :
On the eve of Puja Vacation, the staff cultural programme was held on 01.10.2011. The programme included songs, speeches, recitation, instrumental music, drama, flute and recital etc.

Puja Vacation :
The Academy remained closed for Puja Vacation according to the following dates:

(a) School Section, Light Engineering Section, Swimming Pool Project, Agriculture & Animal Husbandary Trainning : From 3.10.11 to 29.10.11
(b) Teachers' Training Institute, Sub-Contract Workshop and BBA (General) :From 3.10.11 to 12.10.11

White Cane Day :
Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF), Kolkata organized a meeting in connection with observance of White Cane Day on the 19th November, 2011 at the Academy Premises. Representatives from Amway Opportunity Foundation were present on the occasion. They distributed white Cane among the students and trainees on that day. Shri Biswajit Ghosh, Principal of the Academy welcomed the guests and the audience.

State Award :
It is great pleasure to inform that three ex-trainees viz. Shri Shambhu Charan Das (1984-1985), Shri Biswanath Mondal (2003-2004) and Shri Biswajit Sahu (2008-2009) of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Training Course of the Academy received State Awards from Shri M.K. Narayanan, Governor of West Bengal as self-employed workers in mixed farming. On 3rd December, 2011.

Observance of International Day of the Persons with Disability :
On December 3, 2011 , a seminar was organized in connection with the observance of the International Day of the Persons with Disability. The theme was “Rehabilitation of the Visually Challenged People through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)”. Shri Gautam Roy, Executive Director, HR & Administration, CESC Limited, Shri Saurav Chanda, Associate Vice President, Instrumentation and Automation, ESSAR, Engineering Services Ltd. Spoke on the occasion. Swami Suparnanandaji Maharaj. Secretary of the Ashrama presided over the seminar.

Musical Programme :
The students of Vocal and Instrumental Music Sections of the Academy regularly took part in different functions. On 8th December, 2011 , the students performed orchestral programme at the Cultural Programme organized by the State Bank of India Officers’ Association (Bengal Circle) at Uttam Mancha, Kolkata. On the 17th December, 2011, they also performed musical orchestra at Ramakrishna Math, Rajarhat-Bishnupur, Kolkata, on the occasion of Holy Mother’s Birthday and a group of 14 students, 8 students, 8 members of the staff and 2 monks went to Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Visakhapatnam, on the 18th December, 2011 and performed devotional songs and musical orchestra on 20.12.2011.
